Deconflicting Wind-optimal Aircraft Trajectories in North Atlantic Oceanic Airspace
نویسندگان
چکیده
North Atlantic oceanic airspace accommodates more than 1000 flights daily, and is subjected to very strong winds. Flying wind-optimal trajectories yields time and fuel savings for each individual flight. However, when taken together, these trajectories induce a large amount of potential enroute conflicts. This paper analyses the detected conflicts, figuring out conflict distribution in time and space. It further describes an optimization algorithm aimed at reducing the number of conflicts for a daily set of flights on strategic level. Several trajectory modification strategies are discussed, followed with simulation results. Finally, an algorithm improvement is presented aiming at better preserving the trajectory optimality.

Strategic Planning of Efficient Oceanic Flights
The efficiency of oceanic flights is low due to limited navigational and communication equipment, congestion and airspace restrictions. The availability of Automated Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and other improvements provides opportunity for better strategic planning of trajectories. Transatlantic flights between US and Europe constitute one of the busiest oceanic airspace regions ...
متن کاملOptimizing Aircraft Trajectories with Multiple Cruise Altitudes in the Presence of Winds
This study develops a trajectory optimization algorithm for approximately minimizing aircraft travel time and fuel burn by combining a method for computing minimum-time routes in winds on multiple horizontal planes, and an aircraft fuel burn model for generating fuel-optimal vertical profiles. It is applied to assess the potential benefits of flying userpreferred routes for commercial cargo fli...
متن کاملGenerating Optimal Aircraft Trajectories with respect to Weather Conditions
Two major projects have been initiated to improve air traffic management by enabling 4D trajectory planning, whereby the aircraft plan their trajectory both in position and in time. In this paper, we are interested in a Free Flight variant of the concept, whereby airspace users are allowed maximum freedom when selecting routes: aircraft are no longer restricted to fly along airways; rather, the...
متن کاملA Distributed Framework for Traffic Flow Management in the Presence of Unmanned Aircraft
The integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the airspace system is a key challenge facing air traffic management today. An important aspect of this challenge is how to determine and manage 4-dimensional trajectories for both manned and unmanned aircraft, and how to appropriately allocate resources among different aircraft. An integrated approach requires solving the traditional Air ...

The air traffic management system is currently experiencing a significant transformation to provide better quality service and to match the increasing air traffic demand. This transformation requires airlines to retrofit their fleet. However, airlines implement new operating capabilities at different rates resulting in long transition periods in which aircraft with different equipage levels coe...
